I remember being asked at 15 years old what I thought my life was going to be about. Without hesitation I had said that my life was going to be about love. Over the past three decades I had built what the author Richard Rohr calls a “container” for the second half of life only to have it completely demolished.
The great Oglala Lakota Holy Man Heȟáka Sápa (Black Elk) said that everything in the universe works in circles. The planets rotate in circles. Our lives are circular. This is why I find myself in a very precarious situation once again, because my life once was precarious. It will no longer be precarious. It will improve. I will rebuild. It is the circle of life.
My new container will be built on the foundation of love because have always believed that we exist in this form to discover it’s true meaning. Love is unconditional. Love grows, intensifies and becomes all encompassing over time when we find the right person to share the experience with.
The journey, this journey is always towards the other soul as D.H. Lawrence said.
This journey is about finding a connection not only with another person thorough love but with something greater than ourselves. Love is found through a connection with the intangible. This connection requires us to let go of the trappings of the world we live in and embrace the other.
Black Elk said “that Crazy Horse went into the world where there is nothing but the spirits of all things. That is the real world that is behind this one, and everything we see here is something like a shadow from that one”.
Most of us only experience the shadow of things. To truly experience life and love we first need to move towards the spirit of all things.
True love resides in that place.
That is my destination.
