Christmas Memories

Christmas time has always caused me to reflect on many things. I get nostalgic and think of people with whom I have shared a moment or two. I wonder how they have been and what they have been up to. I wish all of them well from an ever-expanding distant past. It’s funny how you can lose contact even in this age of connectivity.

Christmas Past

Never having experienced Christmas or celebrating it as a child leaves me without the warm and fuzzy memories about family Christmases that so many of you have growing up. My very first Christmas was at the age of twenty-seven. Before then, it was just another day of the year for me. I am fortunate to have experienced the magic of Christmas through my children’s eyes. Now they are older and will be experiencing their own lives and creating their own traditions.

How I Spent Christmas

People always ask what I did for Christmas years ago. I’d previously enjoyed a peaceful time in the studio this time of year. There was nothing quite like a good “cuppa joe,” some great music and art materials to bring in the New Year. There was no technology.  The phone never rang, and there were no emails or text messages. It was peace on earth; at least, it was for me.

Christmas Eve

I used to work late into the night at the studio on Christmas Eve and head off home when everyone else was in bed, except maybe for Santa. I loved walking in the snow through quiet streets, by people’s houses and thinking about how lucky they were to have family and people who cared about them. I wondered if they were grateful for what they had.  I am tremendously thankful for what I have now, yet I still wonder if others know how good they have it.

Christmas Future

I plan to head to the studio as soon as possible to work on several paintings I am working on. A great Cuppa Joe awaits me, as does the music and a wonderfully creative atmosphere. With time, everything in my life has always come full circle. In the future, you may peer out of your window very early on Christmas Morning and see an elderly man trudging through the snow alone, it may be future me returning from a beautiful evening spent in my studio on Christmas Eve.

Quote Of The day

“I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.”

~ Charles Dickens ~
