All artists should be using a sketchbook!

In this video, I encourage artists to start using a sketchbook! This video is part of my ongoing “Creativity Project,” which encourages everyone to pick up a pencil or a brush and, in this case, their sketchbooks and start expressing themselves! I firmly believe that making art and creativity are not the realm of a select few special people but can and should be a part of everyone’s life.

The secret is to carry a sketchbook with you!

Get in the habit of carrying and working in a sketchbook. Making art doesn’t mean you have to have a workspace or a studio.  All you need is a piece of paper and a pencil! Doodling, for example, is a natural way to tap into your innate creativity. Everyone can sketch and doodle while you’re on the phone, riding the bus or even while you’re watching television.

We now have more time!

If you didn’t get in the habit of drawing during the pandemic, what’s stopping you now? We can start developing the habit of drawing in our sketchbooks easily if we have them with us! Our sketchbooks should be our go-to if we need to take a break from our devices. If you are working from home or in an office, a great way to take a break is to keep our sketchbook handy!

What do I draw?

Whatever your heart desires! A sketchbook is never meant to be art. A sketchbook is where we can let our minds roam free! It’s where we can become kids again!

Did you say to be a kid again?

Yes, most definitely!

You can paste images, magazine clippings, dry flowers and save treasures and ideas of all kinds! A sketchbook can be more or less like a scrapbook. Mine have been drawing books, notebooks, sketchbooks or a combination of them all!

The benefits of doodling

As mentioned before, studies out of Harvard University list the many benefits that are derived from putting pencil to paper. Things like improved focus, better memory, and not to mention an excellent way to relieve stress are just a few of the benefits of sketching and doodling. I encourage you to read the article here.

So what are you waiting for?

Start sketching!
