Looking at art

Developing an interest in different kinds of art is not all that hard.  Looking at new kinds of art only requires us to step back and try to understand what the artist is trying to share with us.  If we stand or sit there long enough, we may begin to see something else, just like Steve Martin did in the video. One of the biggest challenges most of us must face is dealing with abstract art and understanding it. Don’t feel bad either. This kind of art has always been difficult for the public, especially when it was new.

Keeping an open mind

Art is constantly evolving as should we, we are told. One thing that we all encounter is that as we get older there is a natural resistance to change. There is a longing for the good old days and that which is known. The same can be said about painting and art. Many turn to realism when they cannot understand nor accept new concepts in art. Don’t get me wrong, this is not limited to older people either. Many younger people resist change because they have not been educated in art history and in art appreciation.

Where to start

Start with Cubism. Just start with the pictures first. Look at Picasso and Georges Braque’s paintings and see if you can see the violin, the still life items, and the nude. In other words, be like Steve Martin. See what you can see in the paintings!  Start by taking a look at these works at the MOMA. (Here)

Evolution

Try something new in your painting.  Take a risk. Don’t waste too much time studying the theories behind what you intend to do. Just do it. let your imagination and creativity run wild!
