The importance of understanding colour
Colour is like good food and is meant to be enjoyed. Just like when preparing food, where one must be able to discern nuances in taste, a painter must be able to make colours more delightful to the eye.
Matisse’s Red Studio
I’ve decided to share a couple of The Museum of Modern Arts videos on the topic of Matisse’s Red Studio. Although many of you may not like Modern Art and especially Abstract Art, I think it is essential for anyone undertaking the study of painting to retain an open mind and to listen to what experts tell us about an artist’s use of colour.

The influence of Matisse
Like many young artists I fell in love with Picasso first. However, I quickly shifted allegiance when I began my 40-year love affair with Matisse. I have read a great deal about the artist along with most of his own writings on art. I am still fascinated with his process all these years later.
My own studio
I have tackled pictures of my own studio spaces from time to time. I am by no means comparing myself to the master, but like the master one does need to take up a challenge from time to time. I created this canvas several years ago, when I had begun to expand on my studio spaces. Like Matisse I did not remain in the realm of local colour.
What conservators discover when restoring art
Here’s another wonderful video from the MOMA once again where the conservators are discovering new things that no one knew about the Red Studio!
